When people think of diamond, gemstones and jewellery usually come to mind. In industry, however, synthetic diamond powder is the real “industrial tooth” — indispensable for grinding wheels, cutting discs, PCD compacts and precision abrasive tools.
Many assume that the hardest part of diamond-product manufacturing is the high-temperature, high-pressure synthesis stage. In practice, formulation and batching are the checkpoint that determines finished-product performance and production cost.
Diamond powder is extremely hard and its particles have sharp edges, so it abrades conventional conveying equipment. Worn metal debris can then enter the powder and contaminate the product. Ultra-fine diamond micron powder, meanwhile, absorbs moisture readily and agglomerates: during discharge, bridging and blockage alternate with sudden surges, leaving feed rates highly unstable.
Diamond powder also commands a high market price, so there is almost no tolerance for formulation-ratio errors. Even small weighing deviations shift the hardness and wear resistance of finished cutter heads and grinding wheels; in severe cases an entire production batch is scrapped.
For a long time, batching in the diamond industry has relied on manual scooping and weighing, which makes quality inconsistent from batch to batch.
Strengths: simple and flexible, and well suited to small-batch sample preparation.
Pain points:
· Manual weighing errors fluctuate, so batch-to-batch performance is hard to guarantee.
· Diamond micron powder comes in many grades that are easy to confuse, and a single mix-up directly compromises product quality.
· Micron powder generates heavy dust, which worsens working conditions and wastes costly raw material.
· Formula records are kept by hand, leaving no traceability and hampering quality control.
· Repetitive manual work is physically demanding, and high staff turnover destabilises production.
In diamond micron-powder R&D laboratories, formulations are the core intellectual asset, yet labs have long depended on analytical balances and small scoops. Powder flies and agglomerates, weighing errors are hard to control at the small-gram scale of test samples, different operators produce divergent samples from the same formula, and hand-written records slow formula iteration.
For these reasons, gravimetric feeding systems have become standard equipment on automated production lines for superhard materials.
Core advantage: mass is measured directly by weight, so accuracy is largely independent of the bulk-density fluctuations that make volumetric dosing unreliable.
Diamond micron powder flows poorly and agglomerates heavily, which places strict demands on small-dose batching accuracy. The MoveWeigh laboratory-grade gravimetric feeding system uses closed-loop weighing feedback control and is tailored to small-scale diamond-powder formulation R&D. It removes the weighing errors and contamination risks of manual operation, feeds micron powder automatically to the target weight, and logs weighing data in real time — making every formulation run reproducible and laying the basis for later mass production.
Production-line gravimetric batching units sit at continuous diamond-powder batching stations and cover batching for more than ten types of material. Precise, reliable dosing offsets the weighing drift caused by bulk-density variation. Full automation keeps operators away from dust, and feeding data stays fully traceable, supporting consistent high-volume production of premium diamond products.
Labour demand drops sharply: an operator loads a tray of 100 empty containers and presses start, and the machine then runs unattended, signalling when the containers need replacing.
Feeding follows a two-stage logic — fast feed, then micro-fine slow feed. As the container approaches the target weight the system switches to micro-feed and stops the moment the set weight is reached, which delivers superior dosing accuracy. The configuration suits laboratories, new-formula R&D and small-batch pilot production, while the quick-disassembly design lowers cross-contamination when switching powder grades and particle-size fractions.

MoveWeigh weighing and feeding solutions are not stand-alone machines but integrated metering packages covering the whole diamond chain — from powder post-processing and product batching through to finished-product dispensing.
1. Automatic batching for diamond saw-blade and grinding-wheel cutter heads. Multi-component proportioning of synthetic diamond grit or micron powder with metallic matrix powders such as copper, nickel and cobalt. Loss-in-weight feeders provide continuous feeding and mixing, stabilising cutter-head formulation batch by batch and easing the sawing-performance drift that troubles diamond-tool plants during automation upgrades.
2. Continuous feeding for jet mills and classifiers. Crushed diamond feedstock is dosed into jet mills and turbo-classifiers at a constant rate, which keeps the particle-size distribution of the milled powder consistent; because feed-rate fluctuations translate directly into particle-size drift, gravimetric feeding is the key step in stabilising micron-powder quality.
3. High-end micro-batching for PCD compacts. Premium polycrystalline diamond compacts require accurate proportioning of micron powder and binders under strict impurity limits. Milligram-level micro-gravimetric feeding supports gram-scale and even sub-gram dosing for the raw materials of semiconductor-cutting and high-end cutting tools.
4. Formulation of lapping pastes and polishing micron powders. Nano and ultra-fine diamond powders are mixed with auxiliary powders to make polishing compounds. Because ultra-fine powders agglomerate readily, feeders fitted with powder-activating mechanisms keep discharge stable and help achieve uniform lapping performance.
5. Automatic dispensing of finished diamond powder. Gravimetric-gain batch-weighing systems bottle and bag micron powder and crushed grit to preset weights. Replacing manual scooping cuts losses of high-cost powder, lowers dust exposure and streamlines finished-goods warehousing.
6. Laboratory research and pilot-scale formulation development. Labs and pilot lines can prepare a wide range of formulations quickly. MoveWeigh equipment is easy to dismantle and clean, so cross-contamination is minimised when switching between diamond particle-size fractions and grades, letting engineers iterate formulations efficiently.

China’s synthetic-diamond industry has moved from capacity expansion towards quality and digital upgrading. Weighing and feeding equipment is more than material-conveying hardware: it is the core metering unit of the formulation process. Stable, accurate diamond-powder dosing raises yield, reduces waste of expensive raw material and lowers labour cost.
As nano-diamond, high-end PCD and other new products develop, micro-scale weighing and stable feeding of ultra-fine powders will keep advancing, helping domestic superhard-material manufacturers move further into high-end markets.
